Napster Returns With AI Clones of Classroom Teachers

Napster, the music-sharing service that upended the record industry two decades ago, has re-emerged with a plan to place AI in classrooms through digital versions of teachers. The company has partnered with Gems Education in Dubai to build AI-powered digital copies of instructors, giving students round-the-clock access to a virtual version of their teacher, according to Wired.

The pivot lands far from where the brand began. The original peer-to-peer service reshaped how people traded music after its 1999 launch. Then the lawsuits arrived. A surge of copyright litigation shuttered the operation by 2001.

Over the years that followed, the brand passed through a string of relaunches, ending as a streaming platform, before Florida-based Infinite Reality acquired it in a $207 million deal in 2025 and redirected it toward artificial intelligence. The music service quietly disappeared around January of this year.

Samuel Huber oversees the company’s operations across the Middle East and Africa. He frames the shift as continuous with the company’s origins. Napster, he says, was always about handing power back to users, and the fight now centers on data and artificial intelligence rather than music.

The plan is to construct digital replicas of actual instructors. Each twin learns from a teacher’s own coursework, published writing, and lesson plans, letting students pose questions and grind through tricky material long after the bell rings.

Huber describes the concept as cloning yourself to stretch your own hours further, giving teachers a clearer read on where students are getting stuck.

Deployment begins at the Gems School of Research and Innovation. There it arrives bundled with game-style learning features and tools that generate teaching material with AI.

Huber is adamant that the system supports teachers instead of supplanting them. His analogy: much as a word processor speeds up an author without replacing the person doing the writing, the technology extends what an educator can do. He says student data will remain within the country and will not be used to train Napster’s models.

The rollout aligns with a federal plan the UAE approved in May to move half its government services to agentic AI within two years, and Napster is backing its role with local infrastructure partnerships across the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

The rollout is still in trials. Napster holds that the core exchange between teacher and student will keep taking place face to face.
