Apple bundles new wallpapers with each major software release. iOS 27 goes further. It lets you generate a wallpaper of your own without design tools or third-party apps, working inside the wallpaper picker itself. Image Playground powers the feature, turning a written description into a finished wallpaper in a few taps.
Before You Start
The feature requires a device running iOS 27. Image Playground received an overhaul in this release, and it now offers more powerful image generation than before, along with far fewer restrictions than earlier versions, which widens what you can create. The Image Playground app never has to open on its own. The whole workflow is built into the wallpaper picker, so custom wallpapers come straight from there.
Step One: Open the Wallpaper Gallery
There are two ways to reach the gallery where wallpaper creation begins. The quickest is to long-press the Lock Screen and tap the plus button. You can also reach it from the Wallpaper section of Settings. Both routes land you in the same place: the wallpaper gallery, where Apple’s built-in options and any suggested images sit together.
Step Two: Choose Image Playground
Inside the gallery, look at the top row of options. Image Playground appears there as one of your choices. Tapping it begins a fully custom creation rather than selecting one of Apple’s preset designs.
Step Three: Describe the Image You Want
Once you select Image Playground, the feature asks you to describe the image you want to create. The description is the core input. Write what you want to see, and Image Playground generates it. Because the resulting image is created at the perfect wallpaper size automatically, you do not need to crop, resize, or reframe anything to make it fit an iPhone display. The tool produces images sized correctly for a wallpaper from the start, which removes a step that would otherwise require a separate editing pass.
Step Four: Add a Style or a Source, If You Want One
Beyond the written description, Image Playground gives you two optional ways to shape the result. You can choose a style for the custom wallpaper, which changes the overall look of what the tool renders. You can also base the wallpaper on an existing photo or a specific person, so the generated image draws from something you already have rather than starting purely from your words. Both are optional. If you provide only a text description, the tool will still generate a wallpaper. The style and source controls exist to give you more direction over the outcome when a plain description is not specific enough.
Step Five: Review and Set the Wallpaper
After Image Playground generates the image, you set it the same way you would set any other wallpaper on the platform. On iPhone, you select a picture in Photos, tap Share, and choose Use as Wallpaper. The process is identical on iPad. On a Mac, the equivalent path runs through System Settings, then Wallpaper, then Add Photo, where you choose your image. The creation itself happens on the iPhone within the iOS 27 wallpaper picker.
How iOS 27 Surfaces AI-Generated Wallpapers
Custom creation is not the only place artificial intelligence shows up in the wallpaper picker. On its own, iOS 27 seeds the Featured section of the gallery with machine-generated images, so you may find AI options waiting before you generate anything yourself. The system also suggests wallpapers built from pictures you already have, restyled by the tool. That is a middle ground between using a stock image and writing a prompt from scratch. To keep the origin of these images clear, Apple places its Image Playground icon next to any AI-generated wallpaper in the gallery. The icon indicates where the image came from, so you can always tell at a glance which options were machine-generated and which were not.
What a Correct Result Looks Like
A successful custom wallpaper meets three conditions. First, it reflects the description you wrote, adjusted by any style or source photo you selected. Second, it fits your iPhone screen without manual cropping, because Image Playground sizes the image correctly on its own. Third, once you set it, it applies as an iPhone wallpaper. If your image looks right, fills the screen properly, and applies cleanly, the process worked.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
One unnecessary step is opening the Image Playground app on its own and trying to route the output back into the wallpaper picker. That detour is not needed, because iOS 27 builds the entire creation flow into the picker itself. The gallery is the starting point, not the standalone app.

A second mistake is treating the text description as the only lever you have. If a plain prompt returns something generic, the fix is to apply a style or base the image on a photo or person before deciding the result is wrong. These optional controls exist precisely for the cases where a description alone does not capture what you want.
Finally, resizing or cropping generated images is unnecessary. Image Playground produces wallpaper-sized output automatically, so the image already fits an iPhone display without any manual trimming.
